Varosha used to be one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world. It was once a world-class beach resort and visited by many famous movie stars and wealthy business executives. In the 1960s and early 1970s, the resort was expanding and luxury hotels were being built along the beach. Today, the resort is a ghost town because Turkey invaded the area in 1974. Residents fled the area and the beach resort was fenced off. Today, the resort sits behind three military zones, and Varosha is completely surrounded by chain-link fencing topped with barbed wire. Military officials watch over the area from guard towers and UN helicopters circle overhead. Nature has completely taken over. The streets are empty and weeds are growing up through the cracks in the pavement. The luxury hotels are abandoned and falling down. The beach is barren except for debris and rusted beach umbrellas. Varosha once had a bustling Toyota dealership, but now it’s falling apart and filled with sports cars that are covered in dust and dirt. Varosha’s shopping district was once filled with stores that sold designer outfits, but those stores have been looted and only tattered rags remain. Varosha’s waterfront is blocked off by buoys, so you can’t even sneak in by water. If you tried, guards would surely catch you. Here’s a secret look inside Varosha. You will be one of the first visitors allowed into the ghost town in decades. Get ready to see what’s left of Famagusta’s Varosha beach resort.
