The White House has ended a deal between Major League Baseball and the Cuban Baseball Federation to allow players to sign with U.S. teams without defecting from Cuba. The agreement was initially put forth under the Obama administration and finalized in December 2018. Trump officials cited the 25 percent fee that would be paid to the Federation from the player’s signing bonus as the sticking point. MLB stands by the agreement in an attempt to reduce human trafficking. In the Gagarin Cup playoffs, Avangard defeated Salvat Yulaev in triple overtime 1-0 to advance to the final for the first time since 2012.
